Truck Accidents Caused By Blind Spots

Truck8

Sharing the road with large commercial trucks always increases the risk of an accident, and this is particularly true if the truck driver cannot see your vehicle in their blind spot. Truck accidents caused by blind spot errors account for around 400,000 accidents nationwide every year, including thousands of crashes in Florida. At Earnhart Law, our experienced Delray Beach truck accident lawyers are here to help you get the compensation that you deserve after an accident. Where are Truck Blind Spots?

Because semi-trucks are so tall and long they have multiple blind spots for their drivers. If a truck driver is not diligent in checking their blind spots, they can easily strike a car, truck, or motorcycle near them. Some of the biggest blind spots for a truck driver include the following:

  • Directly behind the vehicle,
  • Just in front of the truck cab,
  • Below the driver’s window,
  • Along the right side of the truck cab, and
  • Along the right side of the back of the trailer.

Depending on the size of the commercial truck, a blind spot can be as big as thirty feet behind a truck, twenty feet in front of the truck, and up to two lanes on the sides of the vehicle.

Liability in Blind Spot Crashes

Truck drivers are trained to identify and check their blind spots while driving, especially when changing lanes, passing other vehicles, or when making a turn. It is the duty of a truck driver to use extra caution and check these spots, and if an accident occurs because of their failure to do so they may be held liable for any injuries that result. Depending on the details of the case, other parties may also share in the responsibility for a blind spot truck accident. If failures in the maintenance or upkeep of the truck contributed to the accident, the truck’s owner or mechanic may share in liability. An experienced truck accident attorney can identify all liable parties in this type of crash.

Compensation for Truck Accidents

Given that the injuries caused by truck accidents can be severe, it is critical that the victims of accidents caused by a truck’s blind spot receive full compensation for their claims. Damages can include economic and noneconomic compensation, which includes coverage of all medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, loss of future income and benefits, pain and suffering, emotional distress, disability, disfigurement, and any loss of enjoyment of life that is caused by the accident.
