What Causes Delivery Truck Accidents?

There are many reasons why an accident involving a delivery truck may occur. One of the most common reasons is that delivery drivers are given impossible schedules to meet, forcing them to violate safety laws in order to complete their orders on time. As a result, drivers are often speeding, failing to obey traffic signs and signals, illegally parking, and failing to check for others before getting back on the road.

Another related reason for delivery truck accidents is driver fatigue. A driver may work between sixty to eighty hours per week in order to make all of their deliveries. Many drivers also have other jobs in order to make ends meet. In addition to the stress of impossible delivery schedules, this all culminates in driver fatigue. A drowsy driver behind the wheel of a delivery truck can be just as dangerous as someone under the influence, and when delivery drivers are fatigued serious accidents can happen.

A third reason why delivery truck accidents occur is because of the stopping and standing hazards associated with the work. Delivery trucks often do not obey traffic signs and signals or the designated parking rules of a street. They often stop directly in front of the address for the delivery and jump out to drop off the package. This illegal stopping and standing can cause dangerous conditions when other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians attempt to navigate around delivery trucks and often end up in front of oncoming traffic.

Compensation for Delivery Truck Accidents

When a person is injured in a delivery truck accident, they are entitled to collect all out of pocket expenses, known as economic damages, and compensation for the less tangible harms, known as noneconomic expenses, for the injuries caused by the accident. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Present and future medical bills,
  • Physical rehabilitation,
  • Lost wages,
  • Property damage,
  • Loss of future income and benefits,
  • Pain and suffering,
  • Emotional distress,
